The royal town of Litoměřice

Litoměřice (24 000 inhabitants) is the nearest diocese. I'm not a Christian but I'm fascinated by old christian places so I've always wanted to visit it. Today's trip's goal was to see 9 churches of Litoměřice- that's a bit awkward because Aussie has so far seen only local churches... I promise this will end soon! But I believe it was worth- some of the places we saw were really beautiful.

Let's start with the pictures of the nine churches. Well, one is actually a chapel and one is a cathedral.

Can you find Aussie? :)

We had a break for some ice cream.

This is how typical houses in Litoměřice look like.

Aussie at one side, my brother at the other one.

Aussie also found this interesting old "bench".

This is the house where in the 19th century lived and died one of our greatest poets (and travellers), Karel Hynek Mácha.
His most famous work is the ballad Máj (May).

Late evening, on the first of May—
The twilit May—the time of love.
Meltingly called the turtle-dove,
Where rich and sweet pinewoods lay.
Whispered of love the mosses frail,
The flowering tree as sweetly lied,
The rose's fragrant sigh replied
To love-songs of the nightingale.
In shadowy woods the burnished lake
Darkly complained a secret pain,
By circling shores embraced again;
And heaven's clear sun leaned down to take
A road astray in azure deeps,
Like burning tears the lover weeps.
...

Almost every Czech child can recite some parts of this book.

Aussie had a rest in the branches of a tree at the cathedral.

You can see Aussie's head peeping out of the shrub :)

After we walked many kilometers we decided to have a lunch in a restaurant in the historical cellar.

The square, there's a plague column in the background.

And a nice view before leaving the town :)

Aussie had a Fidorka in the car to gain some more energy.

  1. There are so many beautiful church buildings! And I love that poem. I especially like the metal filigree, panelled doors and the stonework and arches - gorgeous pictures BTW :-) Fidorka - yum!!
